East West Spill

East West Spill is an ongoing project.

Airports leak light. I began this project with the view to capturing the activity of the airport at night but in doing so I found a quiet and surprising beauty in the spaces beside. The areas that surround airports are inadvertently, beautifully, lit by them.

This project looks from and at the these spaces on the industrial fringe surrounding a modern airport. Often uninhabited, perceived as undesirable, fenced off to people, they are also spaces of quiet illumination, lit by the light spilling from the airport transforming them while the planes that fly over them leave scars on the night sky.

Using a medium format Holga, often with expired unpredictable film, allows the potential for chance imperfections. These idiosyncrasies in many ways help enhance and soften the harshness of the landscape. Using a long exposure the coming and going path of the planes become a visible streaks - like jewels on a light highway - they are in stark contrast to the spaces where the images are captured.
